FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) challenges teams of young people and their mentors to solve a complex problem in a six-week timeframe. Each team solves this problem by creating a robot that is used to compete against other high school teams. This competition exposes them to mechanical, electrical and software engineering as well as sales, marketing, public speaking and community service.

FIRST is not just about robotics, it is about changing our culture. It is about exposing students to the fact that it is more fun to create a video game than it is to play one. The goal is to show students that math, science and technology careers can be fun, rewarding and obtainable. The FIRST team at Hopkins High School is working toward this goal.

Mission Statement

Our Goal is to create a strong sustainable robotics team that will:

  • Welcome all students and make them feel like an important part of the team.

  • Teach skills in technology, including mechanics, electronics, programming, Computer-aided Design, website building, animation, machining, creativity and other areas related to robotics competitions.

  • Teach associated skills including marketing, administration, communication, photography, leadership, budgeting, project planning and other areas necessary to run an FRC team.

  • Acquire and retain support for the team and for FIRST Robotics from schools, corporations, mentors, sponsors, the community and legislature.

  • Effectively compete while following the FIRST theme of Gracious Professionalism.
